Cleaning Kitchen Appliances

In order to maximize the life and usage of all your handy small kitchen appliances, be sure to clean and care for them properly. Here, we'll give you some easy tips to maintain some common small appliances. Do check your small appliances' packaging to keep track of what is dishwasher-safe and what isn't; many glass appliance parts can be popped into the dishwasher after use.

  • Coffeemakers: If you have a drip coffee maker, make sure to change the filter with every use. Wash the pot, lid, and basket with detergent and water, and quickly wipe off the base of the coffee maker. If your glass pot is stained, mix one cup of crushed ice, one tablespoon of water, and four teaspoons of salt in the pot. Swish the mixture, rinse, and then wash.
  • Electric can openers: Can openers are a great convenience, but they can acquire some buildup. After every use, make sure to wipe off the opener with warm water and dish soap. Every now and then, remove the cutting wheel and soak it in hot sudsy water.
  • Toasters: Toasters need regular maintenance to stay in good, clean working order. Always unplug your toaster before cleaning. First, wipe off the exterior and base; then either shake the toaster gently over a wastebasket to empty crumbs or remove and empty the toaster's crumb tray. Wash the crumb tray with warm soapy water. Use a soft non-metallic brush to sweep any remaining crumbs from the stainless steel toaster.
