1. Blenders do much more than just make smoothies and margaritas. Use blenders in the kitchen for making soups, sauces, dressings, and any recipe that requires pureeing or heavy-duty mixing.
2. Blenders typically have either a metal or a plastic base. Plastic base blenders are cheaper, while the metal base tends to be more durable as well as more expensive. If you don't use your blender very often, a plastic base should suit you just fine.
3. Most blenders usually also have either a glass or a plastic pitcher. Glass pitchers are more stable, but quite a bit heavier and more difficult to maneuver. Whichever you choose, treat the pitcher gently.
4. Some blenders offer lots of options and have multiple buttons and settings. Don't be thrown off by the choices available. Think about the type of blending you do, and choose the blender that offers the settings you need. Just because a blender offers more settings doesn't mean it's a better choice.
5. Look for special features on your blender if you use it often. Some blenders have unique convenience options, like a setting that allows you to remove the lid and add ingredients while the blender is running. If you plan to use your blender often, these types of features may be worth the extra cost.
